This was a tricky one as it was actually Irvin Kershner who directed Episode V and not George Lucas. George directed A New Hope but didn’t end up doing the next one. Kershner also directed blockbusters like Never Say Never Again, and RoboCop 2.

Here are some additional facts about Episode 5:
1) The movie won two Oscars at the 53rd Academy Awards.
It won Best Sound and a Special Achievement award for Visual Effects. It was also nominated for Best Original Score and Best Art Direction but didn’t win.
2) The original Empire Strikes Back script had several interesting changes.
Leigh Brackett originally wrote the script for the sequel to Star Wars. Here are some of the ideas that were in her original draft before she died of cancer.
- Luke Skywalker’s twin sister was originally going to be named ‘Nellith’.
- Coruscant’s name was originally going to be ‘Ton Muund’.
- Lando Calrissian was going to be a clone.
- Yoda’s name was originally going to be ‘Minch’.
Brackett passed away after a battle with cancer a month after finishing the script. This left George Lucas and others to re-write it to what we ended up getting.
3) George Lucas Self-Financed The Movie By Himself
George Lucas decided to take a risk and self-financed the second movie by himself. This turned out to be a risk that massively paid off after the success of the film.
4) Han Solo Was Originally Going To Say “I Love You Too” To Leia During Their Iconic Scene
An iconic scene in the movie is Han Solo saying “I Know” after Leia says “I Love You”. It turns out that the “I Know” was actually Harrison Ford’s idea and they made the change from the original line in the script, where he told her Leia that he loved her back.
