So What Is A Midichlorian?

They are microscopic life forms that exist in the cells of all living things. The higher the amount of Midichlorians that someone has, the more potential that they have within the force. So essentially, the higher the count, the more powerful Jedi that you could become.

Who Has The Highest Midichlorian Count?

Anakin Skywalker is said to have the highest, with a rumored count of over 20,000 per each of his cells. Anakin would go on to become the legendary Darth Vader, leaving the Jedi Order behind. He wasn’t called ‘The Chosen One’ for no reason.

What Is The Backstory Behind Them?

George Lucas apparently first thought of the idea for them back in 1977. They didn’t appear in the series until Episode 1, The Phantom Menace. Qui-Gon Jinn had a conversation with Anakin Skywalker about them, where he explained them. He noted that without them, life would not be able to exist.

What Was The Public Response?

The response from fans was controversial to say the least. A lot of fans disliked that Lucas took away some of the mystique of ‘The Force’ by trying to explain it in a scientific way. Some fans feel like the scientific explanation ruins the fantasy element of what makes The Force so great.

This ultimately led to them getting scrapped in the storyline and they didn’t appear in the sequel trilogy either.

What was George Lucas’ plan?

According to George Lucas, he was planning to lean into Midoclorians in a big way if he directed the sequel trilogy. Here is what he said when speaking about his plans to James Cameron:

“[The next three ‘Star Wars’ films] were going to get into a microbiotic world. There’s this world of creatures that operate differently than we do. I call them the Whills. And the Whills are the ones who actually control the universe. They feed off the Force.”

So if you really hated the idea of them in Phantom Menace, you can be happy that Lucas didn’t end up directing the sequel movies as they would have played a much larger factor in the overall story. While saying that, there is a chunk of fans who disliked the sequel movies anyways, so maybe it would have been an interesting take on things? We will never know.

So, what was your score on the quiz? Let us know in the comment section below. We would also love to know what your thoughts about them were. Were you like the fans who thought that they were dumb. Or would you have liked to see George get a chance to expand upon the microbiotic world even more?
